If you want to see something almost unbelievably bizarre, check out “The Boxer's Omen,” a Shaw Brother's kung fu horror flick featuring the tale of a Triad gangster who becomes a Buddhist monk in order to do battle with Thai sorcerers.
I cannot possibly do justice to this movie with a mere description, as the sheer insanity of it must be seen to be believed. Luckily, one of the weirdest scenes in the movie is available as a clip on Youtube, so you get to experience it for yourself. Thailand seems to be the Asian equivalent of Transylvania- a place popularly believed (presumably only by non-Thai people) to be chock full of black magic. Because our Triad gangster hero is the reincarnation of a Buddhist monk, he must enter the monastery (temporarily) and take on a Thai sorcerer in a full-on, no-holds-barred magical duel, pitting the mystical powers of Buddhism against the might of an evil magician. All of this somehow serves to avenge his brother, who was crippled in a Muay Thai vs Sanshou match by a cheating Thai boxer.
I'm not saying it's a good movie. I'm not even saying it's a remotely sane movie, because it's quite the opposite. “Boxer's Omen” is a life experience, and you owe it to yourself to have that experience! If animated crocodile skulls, zombie women, glowing Buddhist monks and foul-mouthed Thai magicians don't entertain you, I don't know what would. If you only see one kung fu horror movie in your lifetime, you should make it this one.
