All of the Jewish theology in this movie really is as weighty and complex as it seems. While I wouldn't call A Serious Man pointless by any stretch, I can definitely see how it could be interpreted that way. This film fits more alongside other Coen Bros. projects like Barton Fink and to a lesser extent Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? It's a surreal, reference-heavy movie that doesn't really care about a traditional narrative structure.

Joel and Ethan are pretty relentless in "A Serious Man"; they unleash more hell on Larry Gopnik than I believe they have on any character, and he's possibly the wimpiest, most ineffectual character they've created, too. So the whole film is so dark it's difficult to watch and yet, in true Coen style, there are moments where I couldn't help but laugh (at the same time I cringed).

I'm not sure there's a point to this film, either, but if there is I believe it has something to do with Larry's exchange with the rabbi at the end, where he insists that Hashem doesn't owe Larry anything, be it mercy or understanding. That's as close as we get to an explanation.
