I'm among those who absolutely love the whole Stieg Larsson Millennium Trilogy of books. Sure, they're not perfect, but the stories are certainly entertaining and Lisbeth Salander is a mighty interesting character.
I've read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo book, seen the 2009 Swedish version of the movie (starring Noomi Rapace in the title role) and now, I've seen David Fincher's version, starring Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig and the incomparable Christopher Plummer. If you're a fan, then The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo movie is a must-see.
David Fincher has done it again. I'm a huge Fincher fanatic, and I wasn't disappointed with his version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo at all. It's slick, stylish and fast-paced, despite clocking in at a whopping 2 hours and 37 minutes.
I get that not everyone loves this story. I also get that not everyone will love this movie as much as I did. That being said, I personally think Rooney Mara brings a whole new take on Lisbeth Salander. Her transformation is remarkable (in other words, it lives up to the pre-release hype and then some), but it's her acting that blew me away. I don't believe I've ever seen another actress who could say so much by saying so little (and in such a totally Lisbeth deadpan way). Give this woman an Oscar nomination. Seriously, do it, Academy.
Another thing that I particularly liked about the 2011 Girl With the Dragon Tattoo movie: It focuses much more on the actual mystery. This is, in my opinion, a classic Who Done It? kind of story. With the book and with the Swedish film, I think some of that element got lost. Steven Zaillian brings the true mystery back into crystal-clear focus in this version.
If I have any bone to pick with this Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, it's Daniel Craig's portrayal of Mikael Blomkvist. He's almost too perfect, too pulled together, to make this role work. I much preferred Michael Nyqvist in the part.
One last thing: Big thumbs up to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, for giving us yet another stellar movie soundtrack (I thought The Social Network soundtrack was phenomenal). Oscar. Award. In. Your. Future.
