Movie fans have a lot of choices as far as new films go this weekend. Movies opening this week include Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Red Tails, Underworld: Awakening and Haywire. Call me crazy, but I think that's a pretty decent box office lineup for January.
Of these, the one that personally interests me the most is Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. I loved Jonathan Safran Foer's book (though I actually liked Everything is Illuminated even more), and I'm curious to see Thomas Horn's portrayal of Oskar Schnell.
Here's the thing that's bugging me about Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close: I suspect it might be somewhat exploitative of 9/11. In the novel, Oskar's dad is killed in the World Trade Center attacks. From reviews I'm reading, some critics do think director Stephen Daldry went a bit too heavy. Don't say I didn't warn you. Here's the trailer, by the way:
Okay, of the other choices, I'm leaning toward Haywire for two reasons: one, it's directed by Steven Soderbergh (a personal favorite) and two, the reviews look solid. This seems like a pretty straightforward action-drama, so if that's your thing, Haywire might be worth your time and your hard-earned money.
Underworld franchise fans, I don't have to say a word about the fourth installment: Kate Beckinsale is back as Selene. You're going no matter what critics or anyone else say, aren't you?
Finally, Red Tails is opening. This is the (long-awaited) film about the Tuskegee Airmen, the black fighter pilots who flew very successful combat missions during World War II. These men battled not only the Germans - they also battled the U.S. military (which was segregated at the time). George Lucas produced and co-wrote Red Tails. If anyone sees this movie, please let me know what you thought!
