Sure, they’re probably going to attract a new generation of moviegoers. Sure, the 3-D technology of today is magnitudes above the old 3-D technology of the 1970s. Still, I can’t see the attraction of going to see a movie again just because it’s been re-released in 3-D.
First it was “The Lion King”. Then it was “Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace”. Soon, “Titanic” is going to be re-released in 3-D. I saw the original releases for all three of these movies; but I’ve got no desire to see the re-releases. I’m sure the special effects of “Star Wars Episode 1” were awesome in 3-D; they were pretty spectacular in 2-D. I’ve got my doubts about a 3-D “Titanic” though. Who needs to see floating, frozen bodies in 3-D?
Maybe it’s just me. I don’t go out of my way to see a new release in 3-D, so I can’t see myself going to a re-release in 3-D. Yes, I’ve been to 3-D movies, both current and in the 1970s, but I only see the 3-D version if it’s the only version showing of a movie I want to see. The movie studios need to spend their time and money coming up with new, original movies, and not on 3-D re-releases. Just my opinion.
