Since I'm not going to discuss how awesome The Cabin in the Woods is, let's do a 180 and talk about a dramedy, shall we? I'm talking about the upcoming movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. This one flew under my radar until yesterday, when I happened on the trailer and realized that Marigold boasts one of the best casts I've seen in quite a while: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel...and on and on. Intrigued yet?
If romantic comedies/dramas are your thing, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is worth seeing, I think. Here's the gist: A group of Brits decide to retire in India. Why? Because they believe it's less expensive than several other locales and because they believe they'll be living in a gorgeous Indian hotel, smack in the lap of luxury.
But guess what? They're wrong, at least about the gorgeous, luxurious hotel. As it turns out, the Marigold Hotel has seen better days. Still, when the group arrives, they give it a go -- and, over time, each comes to understand and appreciate the beauty that is India, and the fact that sometimes you just have to live life to the fullest, no matter what happens.
Seems simplistic, doesn't it? The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (which is, by the way, based on the 2004 novel The Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach) might have a pretty simple plot, but it boasts an extraordinary cast of British actors. That is what jumped out at me while watching the trailer:
And also? John Madden is the director. Yes, that John Madden -- the man who most recently brought us Haywire and, several years back, Shakespeare in Love. If I was on the fence about The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, I wasn't once I found out it's a Madden movie.
FYI: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel opens in limited release in U.S. theaters on May 4, 2012. Hopefully, we'll all get the chance to see this one in coming weeks -- or, at the very least, on DVD.
