'The Cabin in the Woods' looks promising

Horror thriller written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard gets stellar reviews

I'm not sure how The Cabin in the Woods wasn't on my radar before now, but you can bet it is today. Two things get my attention: One, the movie is co-written by the almost always brilliant Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, and two, the reviews for this horror/thriller are off-the-hook good.

Anyone else planning a theater trip to see this one when it opens on Friday? Me too. I might have to make this a night film too, and I almost always see matinee movies now to save my hard-earned cash.

Here's the gist of The Cabin in the Woods: A group of college kids decide to take a vacation. Where do they go? A remote cabin in a heavily wooded area, of course. Oh, and it's right next to a large, creepy-looking lake. Then, strange and terribly bad things start to happen. Sound familiar? It should. On the surface, The Cabin in the Woods sounds like virtually every slasher horror movie ever made. That being said, it's apparently not at all like every slasher horror movie ever made -- far from it.

Before I say anything else, yes, I'm well aware that there is a massive spoiler related to The Cabin in the Woods. No, I don't know what it is, and I hope to NOT know before I plunk down my aforementioned hard-earned cash to see it. So, no spoiler worries with this post. Yay. And here's the trailer:

The Cabin In The Woods - Official Trailer

Did we really expect a standard movie from Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon? Absolutely not! Critics are loving this movie, throwing around words phrases like "deliriously satisfying" to describe it. At last check, The Cabin in the Woods was solidly rated in the 90s on the infamous Rotten Tomatoes' "Tomatometer." For a horror movie (even an unconventional one like this), that's outstanding -- and very rare.

If any of you see The Cabin in the Woods before I do, let me know what you thought in the comments. And please, I implore you: Try hard to keep your comments spoiler-free!
