P.S. I Love you is a heart breaking romance that will bring a tear to even your man's eye. Starring Hilary Swank in the staring role of Holly, she plays a young widow dealing with the loss of her husband Gerry, played by Gerard Butler. The two met when they were young in Ireland where Holly was on a vacation/tour and were inseparable ever since starting from a girl lost in a strange place to the clumsy kiss that made her rush off in embarrassment without exchanging names while wearing his leather jacket. A test of destiny to see if they were meant to be transformed into a story that grabs your heart's strings and pulls them as tight as they'll go.
Soon Gerry develops a tumor that causes his untimely death. Holly has a very hard time grieving over the loss of her husband and becomes a hermit. She stops going work and leaving her apartment at all. She spends her days locked away wearing her husbands old clothes and imagining him there with her keeping his ashes near by at all times. Every night she falls asleep with her phone at her ear, calling Gerry's phone just to hear his voice on his voicemail greeting in effort to keep him near.
Concerned for her, Holly's family, including her mother Patricia, played by Kathy Bates, show up unannounced for her 30th birthday. Seeing her apartment in the condition it is in, her mother tries to convince her that she needs to move on. During her lecture a knock at the door delivers a birthday cake for Holly.
Holly opens the cake box to find that on the cake it says "Happy Birthday, Love Gerry". At first she thinks that it's some sick joke made up by someone in her family until her sister hands her a recording device that Gerry previously told her to give to Holly after the cake was delivered. Upon playing the recording she finds that Gerry has made several arrangements for her before he passed away. Knowing his wife and how hard she would take his departing, he has a series of events planned to help her get back to life.
Including her friends into the mix, Denise (Lisa Kudro), Sharon (Gena Gershon) and Daniel (Harry Connick Jr.), Holly waits every day for a new letter from Gerry in the mail to see what he wants her to do next, always ending his letters with "P.S. I Love You". Helping her relive memories of their time together to overcome the obstacle of moving on, Holly begins to leave the house and do all those things she's been meaning to do but never got around to.
P.S. I Love You was a great movie. Not normally into girlie flicks like this, I would still recommend it to anyone as long as you have enough tissue around to keep up with the tears. Honestly, I would like to watch it again, but it is so packed full with emotion, I don't know if I could watch it again without it having the same effect on me that it did the first time.
