'Resident Evil: Retribution' wins the weekend, but 'The Master' breaks records

Weekend box office take was decent, but not stellar.

Is it any surprise that the latest installment in the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil: Retribution, was the number one movie at the weekend box office? I didn't think so. It was almost a given that the Milla Jovovich action thriller would take the top spot, unless Pixar's Finding Nemo 3-D got a huge boost.

What was a shocker, at least for many industry types, was how well Paul Thomas Anderson's highly-anticipated drama The Master did, in only a handful of theaters. I'll be honest, I'm not at all surprised: I've been going nuts waiting to see this film for months now. My hope now, is that because audience demand is obviously so high, I'll get this movie in my local theater sooner rather than later.
Now for the numbers: Resident Evil: Retribution raked it in at the weekend box office, taking in an estimated $21.1 million. That's very respectable, and it solidifies the fact that we sure love our zombies and zombie fighters. Retribution, by the way, is the fifth installment in the Resident Evil franchise. It made just slightly less than the fourth, Resident Evil: Afterlife. Pixar's Finding Nemo 3D did quite well also, taking in $17.5 million for the weekend.

Let's discuss what The Master did, shall we? The Paul Thomas Anderson drama, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams was in limited release -- meaning it was only shown in five theaters in New York City and Los Angeles. Despite that, The Master made a whopping $729,745 from just those theaters! Yes, that's a huge record. And yes, I think it does bode well for those of us dying to see it in the smaller movie markets. Sit tight, fans, because The Master is coming soon.

Did anyone manage to see The Master in L.A. or NYC? If so, please, I beg of you: Share your opinions of the movie in the comments. I'm dying to hear what you thought!
