Rise of the Guardians

Rise of the Guardians

Fairy tales kicking butt

When I first heard about the premise of this film, I have to admit that I was rolling my eyes and cursing Hollywood yet again.  Upon seeing the trailer, I’ve changed my tune a bit.  For those who haven’t heard, Dreamworks has thrown together a CG animated film (in 3D of course) based on William Joyce’s The Guardians of Childhood.  The basic plot follows what is essentially a super-team of childhood icons as they seek to battle back the forces of evil which threaten to take over the world.

When I say holiday icons, I mean the big ones, like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and the Sandman.  Supposedly Jack Frost is in the movie somewhere too, though I must have missed him when watching the trailer.  This fairy-tale version of the X-Men bands together to fight Pitch (essentially, the boogeyman) and protect the children of Earth.

The voice talent in this one looks pretty awesome.  Alec Baldwin does a Russian Santa, Hugh Jackman an Australian Easter Bunny and Jude Law lends his voice to the villain, Pitch.  The other voice actors I don’t know so well, but I’m sure they’ll do a fine job too.

Seriously, when you consider all the elements of this film, you have to recognize its genius.  Super-heroes plus holidays (including a tatted-out Santa) plus epic battle against the forces of evil equals an exciting film with plenty of humor that should relate to both adults and children.  If this movie is done right, we might be looking at the first real challenger to the enduring holiday legacy of Nightmare Before Christmas.

Here’s the first peak at this new, strange film that may, come November 21, be kicking butt in a theater near you:
