In Sparkle, Jordan Sparks plays a talented young girl with a dream of performing. Eventually, she forms a Motown-style girl group with her two sisters. Whitney Houston plays Sparks' mother, Emma, a former singer who hopes that her daughters' careers will be more successful than hers. I must confess, I got a little misty-eyed when I watched the trailer, especially when Houston tells her daughter, "Was my life not enough of a cautionary tale for you?"The movie trailer pretty much sums up the entire plot of Sparkle nicely, and, not surprisingly, Whitney Houston is featured prominently in it.
Without further adieu, here's the first official trailer for 2012's Sparkle:
If Sparkle reminds you of Dreamgirls, it should: It's really the same story, or close to it. It seems to have the same musical drama vibe. But it remains to be seen if Sparkle can live up to Dreamgirls, though.
I'll admit, this movie looks solid. It certainly boasts a nice cast, and one can only hope that as time goes by, this is how everyone will remember Whitney Houston. It's easy to focus on the tragic ending of Houston's all-too-short life, but it's important that everyone remember how extraordinarily talented she was -- and this Sparkle trailer certainly shows that.
Sparkle is set for release on August 17, 2012.
