Animated flick 'Hotel Transylvania' takes top spot at weekend box office

Numbers suggest movie goers are heading back to theaters.

Movie goers, you're back! The new weekend box office numbers are in, and they strongly suggest that all of us have finally decided, after taking several weeks off, to head back to the movie theaters for a little escapism. And what, pray tell, are we seeing?

We love our animated comedies, apparently: Sony's 3D offering Hotel Transylvania was a huge winner at the box office, taking in a whopping $43 million and easily besting several other high profile film debuts. Before I tell you about the weekend's other major films, did anyone see Hotel Transylvania? If so, what did you think? The trailers I've seen are super cute and I love a great animated flick. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this movie has a strong "word-of-mouth," and that almost always tells me it's a great film. I honestly hadn't planned on seeing this one in the theater, but I'm rethinking that decision right now.

Now for the other films that drew good weekend numbers: The sci-fi adventure movie Looper, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt was second at the box office, taking in just over $21 million (a far cry from Hotel Transylvania's numbers, but definitely a strong opening). This is a must-see movie for me, as the reviews are great and I love Joseph Gordon-Levitt in everything.

Rounding out the top five are End of Watch, Trouble With the Curve and House at the End of the Street. One newcomer I've got my eye on is the musical comedy Pitch Perfect, which managed a sixth place finish even in limited release. This Anna Kendrick movie is getting solid reviews, and I predict it will do very, very well in wide release. I will see this one, because I heart Anna Kendrick almost as much as I adore Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

What, if anything, did you see over the weekend?
